Despite brilliantly portraying Yves Saint Laurent, one of fashion's most memorable and influential people in the biopic on his life, out this month, French actor Pierre Niney knew next to nothing about fashion before he started.

"I wasn't really interested and I didn't know much about fashion before the preparation I did for the part," says Niney, "Now after five months of daily work with a drawer and a stylist, observing how a fashion house runs, having gone backstage on various fashion shows and having intensively studied the archives, my outlook has changed significantly.

Now when I see a dress I realise the inspiration, the craftsmanship and the patience gone into the creation," he says.Yves Saint Laurent is of course the film approved by Pierre Bergé. Bergé told Vogue "I am amazed by Pierre Niney’s performance. He is a very talented actor who managed to disconcert me: at times I thought it was Yves Saint Laurent himself. Guillaume Gallienne (who plays Bergé in the film) is also an extraordinary actor, although it is harder for me to judge his performance objectively.

"Niney worked closely with Bergé and director Jalil Lespert on his character and the difficult task of deteriorating throughout the 28 years he plays of Saint Laurent's life. "For me it was both a really beautiful and tough experience," says Niney. "It’s the first time of my life I needed a real period after the shooting to disconnect from the character, find my real voice again, my body and to put the whole adventure behind me.

"Up next, Niney is shooting a thriller in the south of France, called The Scarecrow, then he'll be coming back to Australia to prep for his next role, as he does each Autumn. "I love to go to the Gold Coast, because my girlfriend is from Brisbane, and I don't know any better place to disconnect."
